Shifting landscapes in Sweden led Korean Young-Mi Kim to her impressive landscape Series.
Recently all areas of ceramic practice have been revitalized and the gulf that traditionally existed between the realms of ‘fine art’ and ‘craft’ has narrowed, resulting in a shift in perception of what ceramics can be and can mean. Beautiful and practical is what comes in mind when looking at the work of Korean ceramist Young-Mi Kim, who has the ability to transform ordinary clay into the extraordinary, starting from very trivial things that surround her. With a great eye for shape, subtlety and color, it’s her ceramic series Through Landscape that really caught our eye.
There is no high- flown inspiration for my series. I usually work and get inspired by very small and trivial things, such as the smell of flowers or the sight of a chubby cat’s tail. While I was in Sweden getting my Masters of Fine Arts, the idea behind Through Landscape came up. I’m from Korea and Sweden has got a totally different atmosphere, especially when it comes to the weather and the landscape. White nights, long and dark winters are phenomena I wasn’t familiar with. Through ceramics I wanted to translate my observations and I just followed my gut feeling in creating the series. If I were writer, I would write on paper with a pen. If I were a photographer, I would take pictures with a camera. As a ceramist, I work with ceramics. I love working with porcelain and various chloride solutions. Porcelain was the most perfect and suitable material for this project.
Ceramic is a very honest material to work with, for it requires such a long time to finish. While waiting for the finalisation, I was able to contemplate about so many things.
Through Landscape was shown in NY, but it hasn’t reached Korea yet. So I’ll make sure to make that happen in 2013.
